Compare to OG Iron Man: he comes off as a personable but ignorant asshole, who within minutes is immediately delivered karmic punishment and spends the entire opening of the movie getting put through the shit so he, and the audience, really feel he's coming out the other side redeemed. He then spends the entire rest of the movie not compromising on his new missions, doing whatever he has to to make it work and atone for his part in messing up the world.
A similar pattern for Riri would be her fucking around in college results in the spread and proliferation of the suit tech that gets her friend killed. Or results in some other kind of karmic punishment, perhaps in addition to her realizing she's been fucking over the other students who weren't taking the easy way out. She then spends the rest of the movie trying to undo her mistake, even without the cooperation and support of people who, until now, have had no reason to trust or work with her but to whom she proves herself with her dedication to actually making true use of her talents. Something like that.
Maybe even tie the gang stuff in earlier, have her vaguely suspicious they were increasing getting involved and getting access to her work, but her not caring. Even the corporations can be involved, similarly jacking her work for their own ends. Now everything is basically her fault on both ends and she truly realizes how absurd her lack of care was.
