Entrée does not mean 'main dish' at all.
A simplified french meal is entrée -> plat -> dessert.
Entrée is stuff like salad, something light before the main dish (plat).

Of course barely anyone in France eats like this anymore, most people just eat a main dish and maybe something sweet afterwards as a dessert.
