It's basic engagement bait. Up and down the power scale of EDH mana rocks are played and are provably good. Beyond just ramping your bombs out in a format where you've got a huge safety blanket of 40 life helping to pay for commander tax once they're dead is obviously useful. But it all loops around to the message these channels all love to push like no tomorrow: your commander should be kind of dogshit to fly under the radar. It shouldn't meaningfully matter to your gameplan if they die. Your real plan should be a generically good pile of cards that function independently from your commander's effect combined with absolute machiavellian rat mentality to socially manipulate the table into killing each other while downplaying yourself.

Seriously, every one of them pushes this. I feel bad for their playgroups for having to put up with these douchebags.
