Magic's aesthetic is shit and will continue to be shit until they bring back blocks.
New planes are entirely pointless because we visit them for what, a week? while they write a few blogposts about wickerfolk and the hoothoot tribes of owlfolk and then the set's over. There's no story to tell. There are no characters to meet. The worlds are glorified trampolines where we planeswalk to them and immediately bounce off towards the next plane.
