Yes, female ones though. Male angels have been creeping in slowly and there's a lot of "female" ones now intentionally drawn to be androgynous with shit like bald heads.

There's plenty of tribes to ply that nonsense to. Can we have one proud and untouched coomer race?

I also want sexy female vampires but they were co-opted as female coombait by pearl rubbers like Anne Rice decades ago, so them being made to appeal to quirk chunguses and rainbow boys at least has pre-Magic pop culture precedent and doesn't feel as forced as making elves fat with beards and bulldyke angels.

The funniest thing about Wizards intentionally sinking their own sales by fighting against der coomer is that they have worked with so many artists who could deliver top shelf goods if they just let them cook. Pic related got about 60 cards under their belt for wizards, and the art for the cards they got ranged from okay to pretty good, but if you check out their Patreon or artstation it's dangerously based with goonbait. They obviously like drawing it and they're really good at doing so but wizards apparently just doesn't want money bad enough to appeal to the kind of males who are currently throwing literal billions of dollars at vtubers and ethots and gacha games because pp. I'm willing to bet they made more from private commissions than they get from WOTC. It's just baffling to me that WOTC doesn't want a slice of that pie.

Given their obvious inclination towards UB now, it's really not that surprising. Magic can't afford to be edgy or goonery the way it once was anymore, simply because that's not profitable to stakeholders, and dangerous to hasbro's image as a family friendly company. Goonbait likely wouldn't even sell more product either, it'd just raise the price of the goonery cards.

Probably because it still unironically improves their deck when I see people doing dumb shit like running Blood Money in every deck thinking "But I could get 40 treasures in one turn!!!" then what actually ends up happening is they die before they can cast it.
So it's a mix of the player being too dumb to realize they're not actually getting advice from someone not phoning it in, and the fact that the deck is so bad that this phoned in advice still improved it anyway.

Easiest one is:
>"What do you want to do when you sit down to play this deck?"

Ask him if he's even looked at his own deck.
Literally just start pointing to cards and ask:
>"What does this do? In the context of your deck? What cards synergize directly with it? What turn does it do that effect at it's earliest? How consistent is getting it off?"
Don't need to really listen to any words he's saying either if you can't be assed, just listen if he's scrambling for an answer, or has actually thought about it.
And try:
>"Have you goldfished or tested this deck?"
>"Assuming nothing at all happens, do you have a threatening boardstate and or hand by turn [depends on whatever bracket or powerlevel you play]?"

99% he can't answer jackshit. First part is making him admit that. Naturally, don't shittalk him for admitting that. Deckbuilding can be pretty overwhelming for noobs since most cards just seem pretty functional.
Then you can ask things like:
>"What boardstate do you want to achieve by turn 6-7? Name the actual cards, both in hand and on board"
>"What's the perfect opening hand for you?"
>"Goldfish your deck 10 times. Compile how your hand and board look at turn 7. Are you hitting all 7 lands? If not, how many out of 7? From which turn do you start missing them?"
And when he still can't answer the first two:
>"Why the FUCK did you make this deck if you clearly don't care? WHY did you pick the commander? WHY did you put ANY of the cards in the 99? If you can't answer any of these, you should simply abandon the deck"
In the case he CAN answer that he picked Pantlaza because he wants to play dinos and turn them sideways, you can start from the top again. Eventually, he'll break from the cycle if he's committed.

I probably did not word this in an ideal manner. But this helped me tune my own decks and helping me teach my noob friends how to deckbuild.
Best of luck anon.

hot him, but I have built and tested over a hundred decks by now, and I keep running into the same trap of building a commander because I think he sounds cool, only to realize on the 3rd-5th iteration of the deck that it plays completely different from what I expected.
I think I can count the decks who did exactly what I expected from them on one hand.

Yeah it is, but I don't see how that's relevant for this. Anon's got a friend who shows them a pile of cards and asks to make cuts, while seemingly? not making their own effort to cut down to 100 and make a playable deck. Can make a casual tabletop kitchen deck all the same. Still got to adhere to the 100 card deck rule though.
>>95845299
That's part of the natural deckbuilding process I reckon. Not at 100 myself probably, but I know your feelings well enough. Been there done that. I've gotten better at recognizing it, but I still regularly fall into that trap too. The simple problem is that there's usually essential info about your deck you can only glean from playing it.
>Made Ojer Axonil spellslinger since I never went through actually making a spellslinger deck in paper, assumed I'd be throwing 10-20 damage nukes every now and then
>Turns out in paper that it always becomes 1-hit-K.O. combos
>Friend made Massacre Girl removal tribal and added one 3-card infinite as a "backup"
>Every game he played with the deck ended up revolving around him finding the infinite by drawing his entire deck
Funnily enough, the first ever deck I brewed, Xenagos, played exactly how I intended to brew him. Difficult to imagine getting sidetracked while building the benchmark huge creature go sideways commander, to be fair.

>The greasiest motherfuckers you've ever seen

>Catch a guy just tutoring at random to put a card on top

>"Oh I cast enlightened tutor during all this arguing and no one responded so I'm tutoring from it"
>Call a judge and tell them what happened
>"Sorry anon but there's no proof he didn't declare his spell so play on as normal"

Competitive magic sucks in part because the best way to get a win is to get your opponent dq'd.
Magic is a complex game and most pro players grind in MTG, so they might miss or shortcut something and then a shrewd opponent calls a judge at every opportunity. It's toxic AF.

I've got two questions, hopefully somebody can help me with at least one:

- Is using The Master of Keys with Rooms any fun? I like the synergy between giving enchantments escape combined with the room that makes creature tokens when cards leave my graveyard. If anybody here has built him with Rooms, how fun is it? Not so much concerned about power level, more so whether you find that play style to be fun?

-What's the better way to build Megatron? An Aristocrats-style deck where I'm mostly concerned with bleeding my opponents for as much damage as I can, leaning into his top face's ability to generate mana based on how much life my opponents have lost? Or by stacking my deck with lots of huge artifacts and ways to cheat them out, to get the most out of his bottom face's ability of sacrificing artifacts to deal lots of damage to my opponent's creatures?

>TQ
Savra, my beloved, my beautiful. Let us make tons of 1/1 black/green creature tokens we can then sacrifice to tear our enemies' boards apart creature by creature.

iron throne background
just fill the deck with 20+ aristocrat effects for artifacts and tokens, up to 10 token engines, a bunch of token and treasure spells, a bunch of sac outlets (warren soultrader is by far the best one), a bit support like Harmonic Prodigy, some theft interaction (Tentative Connection!)
strategy: early aggro with tokens (that you turn into skeletons) and keeping the life of everyone balanced, then build up a bunch of aristocrats, reach critical mass (usually 3-5 individual aristocrat effects) and sac everything to kill the table. on a <$100 budget, it reaches that state pretty consistently around t6-7.

37 lands are ok. the issue are the filter lands that don't produce mana unless you have another in play and the check lands, the latter requires more basics in your deck to be optimal.
also ha ing a commander that triggers off life lost (even your own) and include only one pain land is retarded. put all three in there

Counter blitz is fun and does its game plan well, it also has some intricate timed interactions with pulling counters at the right time specifically with sagas, letting you keep them on the field longer and proliferating them for double effect when you can

They can definitely be made better with a few card tweaks but out of the box it works and is complex enough to be engaging

I don't know if its good or not, but a colorless Ultima deck seems quite strong. Both because the commander acts as a mana doubler, making dropping big eldrazi and overcosted artifacts easy, and blighting enemy lands to fuck with their color access. Which won't be very effective against a monocolor deck, but a 2 or 3 color deck where you specifically target their multicolor lands or whatever color they have the least of could be really painful.
>yfw when you are a red/white deck on turn 7 and the only white mana you have on your board is from an any-color mana rock, everything else is mountains and wastes

your points basically boil down to
>casual players that have never played competitive magic in their lives suddenly play decks with real muscle and thus don't know how to behave with it, like most of humanity would when given an ounce of actual power
>cedh has many similarities with poker (angle shooting, seating being important) and should be approached accordingly
in theory there is no reason why cedh cannot work when poker can - it all boils down to judges actively monitoring the table - but at the same time too many people want to win without having the proper etiquette or social iq (go figure this hobby is full of autists) so the solution really is a return to public shaming again

Here's all the cards that now have full functionality in Commander.
Well... except for Legion Angel. You need to encounter a specific scenario for it.
>903.11. If a player is allowed to bring a card from outside the game into a Commander game, that player canโ€™t bring a card into the game this way if it has the same name as a card that player had in their starting deck, if it has the same name as a card that the player owns in the current game, or if any color in its color identity isnโ€™t in the color identity of the playerโ€™s commander.
So, you'd need SOMEONE ELSE to have a Legion Angel on the table for some goddamn reason, AND you'd need to at least be playing white, AND you'd need to own a Legion Angel card but not have it in your deck, AND you'd need to find a way to either steal their Legion Angel in a way that blinks it onto your side, or make a token copy of it on your side. THEN you could grab your own Legion Angel and bring it into the game.

Adding to this anon: if the religion you reference is from europe you get no points, because the whole point is whether or not such beings look like the culture that created them or what white people projected onto it after the fact. Like how paintings of Jesus showed him as dark skinned and with jewish features from the 3rd century up to about the 15th century, after which renaissance artists shifted to making him lighter skinned and blue eyed to be more palatable to the europeans comissioning the paintings.

angels evolved from bird worship. bird worship was common in ancient religions, the most common symbol of this is the winged disc symbol (google it if you want to know more). in medieval Christianity, the symbol evolved into cherubs, which were then taken by the Americans and made sexy. most notable about cherubs and modern angels is that they always have golden (not blonde) hair.
the colour white being linked to purity is probably found in most cultures because of clothing. I just know about Europe - clean white clothing reflects the sun and makes you stand out, but at the same time, you see every stain on it and it's hard to keep clean, so wearing white was a sign of elegance (festive dresses) or status (priests, nobility).

Okay I wasn't going to but we have some very bad actors in here

Amesha spentas (given colored robes in art but described in the text as dazzlingly bright), fravashi. Heck even in south America, their cosmologies have blindingly white creator deities and his helpers too, look up the mapuches or Pillan who is described as shining like fire and has a headdress of white and black feathers.

None of these are from European sources. Heck in Hinduism white is associated with wisdom knowledge etc (divine qualities) and caste systems worldwide reflect this (all of which predates colonization)

I was thinking about how Iโ€™d build her. Sheโ€™s basically just a kill spell in the command zone. You wait until you have haste, you pump her, and knock someone out. Like mono green infect type deal, but with ramp? Iโ€™m not sure itโ€™d be that good or that fun. I think you could definitely save up enough resources to kill one person, but then youโ€™d just durdle while you build up resources to kill someone else. To add to this, I recall a passage from a book on historical Andalusia. The Muslims kept detailed trade invoices on sex slaves trafficked through Spain. The most sought after and expensive slaves were blonde haired blue eyed white girls, the least expensive were Africans. This was over 1,000 years ago. The Vestige was a structure left on Cocoon by Pulse during the war between the two of them, it contains a Fal'Cie that was planned to be used to make L'Cie out of cocoon citizens in order for the ultimate plan of the bad guys to come about.
In that image, the Vestige is being transported to the Hanging Edge, which is the staging ground for what is known as the Purge, in which people who have been deemed to be tainted by Pulse are to be removed from Cocoon.

Not every deck does better with more interaction. Sometimes reinforcing your gameplan is better than trying and failing to stop the opponent's. This isn't cEDH where every spell requires a senate hearing on who at the table has interaction and should be forced to spend it. Unless it's a control deck most of the built by numbers youtuber recommendation decks should be playing less removal and more ways to win. Also Fogs. Fogs overperform in casual.

Fromsoft games crossover. Equipment and legendaries from Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring, including a Curse of Undeath mechanic on various monsters that automatically return themselves to the battlefield from your graveyard on your upkeep, but whenever they do mill you for their power + their toughness. Legendaries based on bosses flip to show phase change differences, like a Lady Maria where you have to pay 6 life to flip her into a more dangerous version of herself. So on and so forth.

Since it's a Secret Lair I'd probably have to focus on Duel Monsters, so probably DM, BE, RE, and Relinquished since they're the most recognizable. And then some reskins of staples as Yugioh staples, like a Solemn Judgement Counterspell. If I got to print an original card, it'd be Pot of Greed, 0 drop artifact with tap, sac, draw 2.

Its he's not asking for the cards that will be on the board, just "whats the interaction you want to use to win the game?"
Once you know what your specific endgame is, you can include cards that enable that, help you dig for the pieces, act as potential alternatives, synergize with one or more of your pieces so that if you only have half your combo you can still get some value out of it while waiting for the other half, etc.
If you don't know what your goal is, you can't tell if you are getting closer to it or not.

What do your early turns look like? What's does a good opening hand look like?
Do you play your ramp on the early turns or do you focus on getting cheap flyers out first? Is it better to dump creatures onto the board in the first two turns then draw off of them with Edric on turn 3, or is it better to get Edric out quickly?
And if you wanna share your lists too, that would be cool.

Y'shtola in Commander is terrific, Cloud is god tier for equipment decks, Choco for Birdemic, Kefka has the potential to displace Nekusar (or synergize with him), and Ardyn is what the demon deck degens have been frothing at the mouth for. As for the underrated legendaries, I've gotten my ass handed to me multiple times by Lightning and Hope. Lightning with Lizard Blades, Buster Sword, or even Brotherhood Regalia is honestly disgusting, and that's not even including potential degen combos either that I have yet to see.

As for Hope: fuck him. He's in practically every mill deck I've seen thus far and this fucker is AIDS.

Its a shame I don't give a shit about FF13 and I have too many other commanders I want to build first, because Lightning does look like an excellent commander. The funniest build I have seen for her yet involves creating an engine where you basically just draw through your deck in an ever-escalating wave specifically looking for 3 cost mana rocks to put down on the field to fuel casting more mana rocks, dealing damage and gaining life, both of which cause you to draw more cards, giving you more mana rocks, etc.

They know this by now. Neon Dynasty sold extremely well, people chased the Jumpstart anime cards like crack, the city styles SLD is one of the most popular ones ever, they added anime alts to the Wilds of Eldraine and Ravnica Remastered packs, and Final Fantasy is putting up better numbers than LotR already. Wotc is tasting the anime money for the first time and it tastes good. I expect more.

I've got a timing question, in regards to Hex Parasite, and my commander Skullbriar:
If someone decides to be an asshole and kill Skull by using -1 counters, is there ever a moment between re-casting and the state-based-action of him dying that Hex Parasite can remove the negative counters? I'd assume I would need something in the middle, a trigger effect, to create the timing to activate.

The people who grew up with niche anime in the 90s are now in the prime spending period for stuff like MTG, and anyone younger than that has never even known anime as anything OTHER than normal. These days, anime is on netflix like any other programming. And if you are the sort of person who plays MTG, you like anime and fantasy. How many nerds are going to foreswear anime to get their fantasy and scifi fix with its the one medium that churns those genres out reliably?

No, Skullbriar will immediately die, before triggers even hit the stack. You either need a static effect giving him more toughness, or a way to move him to hand/library (which will clear counters on him because they're hidden zones).

SBAs are automatic and no one can respond to them/stop them/do anything about them. Your commander would be soft-locked. The only way out of it is if Skullbriar gets bounced to hand while it's on the stack, but since that's a blue thing you'd have to have a reallll friendly blue player that actually runs that card (which is exceedingly rare, desu senpai). The only way to prevent this is to get rid of your commander before the -1/-1s can resolve (sac, destroy target creature, etc)

You can't respond to SBAs, period. Once your commander dies from the -1/-1s, he's done for. You'd need to respond to the -1/-1s and do something to prevent them from ever happening in the first place (or buff your commander's toughness like the other anon said and THEN remove with Hex Parasite)

I've been testing Tidus and I'm very on the fence about him. His ability is great but you need other creatures with evasion to get it going since he comes with none of his own. You can easily end up in awkward game states where you're just awkwardly smashing into a chump blocker with Tidus himself if you've got no other creatures. Pic related has been my Bant counters deck of choice for awhile and I always miss the flample in the CZ when I'm playing Tidus.

I've only gotten in one game with Tidus thus far and the base precon at that. Like you say, the evasion is essential. I was on the fence about the 2mv enchant that exiles and makes a spirit, but it proved invaluable for getting in hits. Cards like Kodama of the West and Herald of Secret Streams are auto includes. I've looked over all creatures that give flying counters and wasn't too impressed.
I did immediately include Falco Spara and then looked over the precon it's from. Might finally be a deck I can use Parallax Wave in for funky shenanigans

Ledger Shredder and Cloudfin Raptor have been my top performers for racking up counters and hits for him so far. I've been considering pic related since I'm finding you want literally anything that gives itself a counter and has evasion that you can play before Tidus to get the ball rolling.

WotC really just said "fuck it" to the Storm Scale, didn't they? The mechanic so broken it had an entire rating system named after it, that wouldn't be brought back, and here we are with what feels like a new Storm card every single set. Like, we have a Planeswalker that literally gives you an emblem so everything has storm.

Like, MaRo's last statement about it was that its still a "10 on the scale, won't be in a premiere set", yet its been printed into Standard and made even easier with support

It was one thing when we got Thousand Year Storm, since it was basically unplayable and entirely on-flavor. But now we have stuff like Ral, Crackling Wit to just cantrip into 10 Loyalty, and now you have permanent Storm.

FF is a game where you can actually see what the characters look like, even god's biggest retard can turn on FF7 see Tifa is a pretty white girl.
LotR is a book where the characters are described to you. Even if it's stated in plain english in the book Eowyn is a pretty white girl it's not something you can physically see which leaves a loophole open to companies like wotc to get squirrelly and race bend everybody for brownie points and outrage bait.

Because the characters in the book are described but never shown in a visual medium. How they look is up to interpretation. Even the Peter Jackson movies are a *version* of the characters, largely accurate but by no means holy.
For final fantasy characters, we know *exactly* what they look like. There is absolutely zero ambiguity as to how Cloud Strife looks, or Golbez. If you race swapped any of them or even just changed too much of their costume, it would be simply indefensible.

Note how to you, "Magic" is one of the oldest characters in the franchise who has been dead and buried and mostly entirely irrelevant for a decade, outside of a set they made referencing old stories.
Are the funny animals not magic enough for you? There are some stuffed toys from duskmourn that fit the magic aesthetic, aren't there? They're much more recent than Urza. Wouldn't they be a better example of the magic aesthetic?

This is how I know you don't actually have thoughts or opinions. You don't actually care what the magic aesthetic is or how ridiculous the aesthetic is stretched: If it says magic on the booster pack, you'll gobble it up without a second (or first) thought. Magic could be sponge monsters fighting eachother with spatulas at the bottom of the ocean and so long as it didn't say SPONGEBOB in bright yellow letters, you'd have no qualms.

Magic's aesthetic is shit and will continue to be shit until they bring back blocks.
New planes are entirely pointless because we visit them for what, a week? while they write a few blogposts about wickerfolk and the hoothoot tribes of owlfolk and then the set's over. There's no story to tell. There are no characters to meet. The worlds are glorified trampolines where we planeswalk to them and immediately bounce off towards the next plane.

At least then they'd have the time to flesh it out into an actual world with an actual story and maybe a few actual characters and events.
They could explain why the queen is sitting by a train wearing a cowboy hat AND they could explore the ramifications of that.

I would support this. I unironically think Wizards saying that there was no appetite for it in their focus groups is a deliberate psyop to try and make people feel like outsiders for wanting formats without UB.
I know players at my LGS who have been in the hobby for decades who have dropped out of draft and pre-releases for the first time ever because it's all UB slop.

You can like or dislike things independently of whether they're UB or not.
I like Lord of the Rings and think it fits the magic setting.
I dislike Wacky Races and don't think it fits the magic setting, even when they print a legally distinct version of it.
I'm saying you (or the other anon if you're nta) doesn't actually have an opinion on these things, and simply divides what they like and dislike into "is ub" and "isn't ub".

If you're openly willing to accept Bloomburrow because it's not UB but you'd be against Redwall because it is UB, that's not a matter of taste. It's dogma.

Talking animals as a fantasy concept goes well beyond Redwall for one thing, and if somehow it had been a Redwall UB it would have completely recontexualized the set.

I can't remember the name of it but all this comes from ONE case in US law that says a company has a fiduciary duty to make its shareholders money.
So a company can never stick to a set of principles or make certain actions off limits if it can sell out and make a quick buck.

If that decision was overruled and the case law flowing from it ignored, companies would actually be able to say "no we want a specific environment for our game and that includes not selling ad-space"

I veiw UB as the ultimate abandonment of effort, they are just using another already existing property instead of expanding Magics universe and lore. I also dislike Duskmorne and Wacky Races because they are both very low effort sets. This low or completely lacking effort is a prevailing theme common in modern Magic design philosophies. But low effort is still preferable to no effort. My issues with UB is exactly that. Not that they lack a good aesthetic. It's a foreign IP brought in, literally and definitively not Magic even if it 'fits' the aesthetic. I'd rather have universes within because at least then there's a chance things will get better. UB can only ever progress the problem. Magic is being replaced piecemeal and you're OK with it because you like the aesthetic.

Don't listen to this retard, it's well-accepted in the community and even the Soifessor says it all the fucking time.
A hat set is a set where characters we know from other MtG planes go to a new plane that is themed entirely around something in movies or pop culture, and rather than creating new characters or writing compelling lore for how existing characters have become involved in this plane and its customs, characters mostly (and often quite literally) put on a hat as a hollow nod to the theme.

Queen Marchesa putting on a cowboy hat and joining a bunch of outlaws for a heist? Hat set.
Leader of the fucking Dimir guild becoming putting on a fedora and becoming a detective? Hat set.

By this definition, Streets of New Capenna was absolutely a fucking hat set. Sucks to be this guy >>95851514

I would add that hat sets will often add magical elements to something that is not typically magical, and that's often a redflag

I was gonna use like Elesh Norn as a second Panharmonicon and just grind out Clues, Treasures, Thopters, etc. Then just make copies of stuff like Angel of the Ruins after cycling it, Riptide Gearhulk, etc. Honestly though, the reason I tossed hashaton in the long run was because he was just a pile of value-cards with no real theme.

The line is pretty fucking clear. If the "theme" of the set came from something in the last 100 years, particularly if it was popularised primarily or exclusively by movies, it's a fucking hat set. It's not complicated.

If Spider-Man was a hat set, then Jace would planeswalk to the Port Authority and buy a "I <3 NY" t-shirt and that would be the card "Jace, Touring Planeswalker" or some shit.

Gothic horror was a type of novel for almost two centuries before cinema even existed.
The first is widely considered to be The Castle of Otranto in 1764.
Even Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was 1818. The stereotype of the aristocratic vampire was started by The Vampyre in 1819.
Gothic novels were actually such a meme that even Jane Austen wrote a story about a girl whose fascination with them was intended as an example of her childishness and naivity.
In fact the trope was around for so long that books such as Dracula (1897) and The Turn of the Screw (1898) were considered a revival of the genre.

Would you care to try a better shitpost, sir?

Hat sets are only invoking a setting or genre, even when they're done well which I think is generally true of Innistrad. >Hat sets are only invoking a setting or genre
No, hat sets invoke the way particular genres are depicted in cinema. You even acknowledge this when you tried to argue that Innistrad is based on cinematic depictions of gothic horror rather than just what's in the fucking books that those films faithfully adapted.
You can argue it for Double Feature, by all means. But trying to argue it for original Innistrad just isn't true and you know it.

It's also why Amonkhet and Theros hit different. While Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece have been featured in movies, there's nothing in the set that is explicitly derived from films that wasn't also just in the source material.
If Wizards printed those sets today, they'd likely make sly references to Disney's Hercules or Ancient Aliens with or without license.

A hat set is a matter of intent. It marks the point at which WotC went from drawing inspiration from fiction to just slapping movie references on a card and calling it a day.

I don't think we do. I'm genuinely convinced you're misinterpreting it deliberately, my only question is why.
>So what do you think constitutes a hat set?
Already explained, and you've spent the last few hours pretending not to understand it.

>>95851565
>A hat set is a set where characters we know from other MtG planes go to a new plane that is themed entirely around something in movies or pop culture, and rather than creating new characters or writing compelling lore for how existing characters have become involved in this plane and its customs, characters mostly (and often quite literally) put on a hat as a hollow nod to the theme.
I would add that hat sets will often add magical elements to something that is not typically magical, and that's often a redflag
>>95851602
>The line is pretty fucking clear. If the "theme" of the set came from something in the last 100 years, particularly if it was popularised primarily or exclusively by movies, it's a fucking hat set. It's not complicated.
>>95852055
>Gothic horror was a type of novel for almost two centuries before cinema even existed.
>>95852110
>No, hat sets invoke the way particular genres are depicted in cinema. You even acknowledge this when you tried to argue that Innistrad is based on cinematic depictions of gothic horror rather than just what's in the fucking books that those films faithfully adapted.
>>95852110
>It's also why Amonkhet and Theros hit different. While Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece have been featured in movies, there's nothing in the set that is explicitly derived from films that wasn't also just in the source material.
>If Wizards printed those sets today, they'd likely make sly references to Disney's Hercules or Ancient Aliens with or without license.
>A hat set is a matter of intent. It marks the point at which WotC went from drawing inspiration from fiction to just slapping movie references on a card and calling it a day.

Yeah that's because the people working at Wizards now are not the people who worked at Wizards when Innistrad first released and either a) they have a mistaken idea of why the set was popular to begin with or b) as part of their marketing they have deliberately been told to talk about movies to make sets sound more relatable.
There may even be a secret c) option where they think Innistrad was popular because people like movies and thats why they leaned hard into multiple fucking years of printing sets based on movies.

I don't think you can possibly be so stupid that you think what Wizards of 2021 says and does is the same as what Wizards of 2011 thought and did.

No, it's not because of UB, it's because there's 6 sets a year now. Twice as many sets means half as much time polishing a set per release. They just choose to allocate more of those resources to UB because they want to take advantage of the marketing bonus they bought, but even without UB there would still be as many shitty sets released.

>A "world of hats" is a storytelling trope where a fictional world is defined by distinct, often exaggerated cultural or occupational traits assigned to different groups, regions, or factions, much like each group wears a metaphorical "hat" that defines them. Itโ€™s commonly used in science fiction, fantasy, or role-playing games to simplify world-building, giving each culture or planet a single, easily recognizable identityโ€”like a planet of warriors, a city of merchants, or a tribe of scholars. The term originates from TV Tropes and critiques the tendency to reduce complex societies to one-dimensional characteristics for narrative convenience.

>For example, in Star Trek, Klingons are the "warrior race" and Ferengi are the "greedy merchants." While this can make settings memorable and easy to grasp, it risks oversimplifying cultures and reinforcing stereotypes. The trope is often discussed in the context of tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons or video games where factions need quick, distinct identities for gameplay or plot purposes.

>Definition:
>"Hat set" is a fan-coined term used critically to describe sets that:

>Rely heavily on movie tropes or pop culture genres (e.g. Westerns, noir, action heist films),

>Often feature established Magic characters literally or metaphorically "putting on a hat" to match the theme,

>Prioritize theme-driven, trope-heavy design over worldbuilding or deeper lore,

>Sometimes force non-magical items (guns, cars, cassette players) into the set via magical contrivance,

>Reflect a shift away from the slower, deeper storytelling of multi-set blocks toward rapid, surface-level thematic churn.

>Origin:
>Emerged from frustration with modern set design, especially after blocks were cut (~2018).

>Seen as a symptom of WotCโ€™s increased production cadence, diminished narrative depth, and marketing-driven tropification of set identity.

>Examples:
Murders at Karlov Manor โ€“ Ravnica turned into a noir detective story.

>Outlaws of Thunder Junction โ€“ A Western film pastiche, complete with hats, heists, and guns (all "magical").

>March of the Machine characters showing up across disparate genres with little in-world logic.

>Not: Theros or Eldraine when based primarily on myth or folklore rather than media tropes.

>What It's Not:
>Itโ€™s not simply a return to an old plane.

>Itโ€™s not just a set with a strong genre identity.

>Itโ€™s specifically tied to a sense of creative dilution or branding-over-worldbuilding.

Spicy take calling MotM a hat set, but I'll take it.

IMO hat sets are when there isn't anything in the set except for the "hat" as it were. Noting in OTJ had "lore" or worldbuilding other than cowboys and crime. There was a little bit about the desert and living cactuses, but otherwise there didn't feel like an actual "world" involved, just themed set pieces, same with Murders and Aetherdrift.

The first kaladesh set felt like it was showing a world that had a focus on aether and craftsmanship, tinkering and castes. Not everyone was focused on racing, even though it was obviously a large focus of the culture

Return to Ravnica was my first proper set and immediately you had a feel for all of the different guilds, but also what life in and around those guilds was like. Importantly you also had cards that were not directly involved with the guilds themselves but simply existed in Ravnica.

It may seem superficial, but those are the bits that make the planes feel "real" and the loss of that depth might not be immediately apparent, but it makes those expansions feel shallow. If we were given a mini-set or a smaller second release to feel those out a bit more they'd probably by much better recieved but with a single release these sets feel half-baked cash grabs that shouldn't exist.

This can be felt mechanically with keywords that aren't ever going to come up again, under what world are "collect evidence" or "cases" or things like Max speed going to come up again? That means the 40 odd Max speed cards (spread across the colour wheel as well) functionally are a dead mechanic.
Crimes and Exhaust are better but in the case of crimes it's such a specific flavour there that it makes it hard to insert into other MTG sets when compared with something like Magecraft, or things like flashback

What you're essentially describing is hat sets you like and hat sets you don't like though.

Duskmourn had plenty of lore. I actually loved the shit with Marina Vendrell and Valgavoth. I'm not entirely opposed to an entire plane being taken over by a haunted house, but the problem is that realistically it was just a vehicle for 80s horror movie references. Why are there cheerleaders? Why are there sony walkmans? Why are there hockey sticks and baseball bats? Because it's an 80s movie reference.
I don't think the world as it existed was very believable or sustainable, but there absolutely fucking were people who did, and I argued with them. I don't see why anyone would continue to live and have children in a literal nightmare world where most supplies magically spawn inside a haunted house that is trying to eat you. The extend to which people are able to live normal lives in that world was hotly debated with some people arguing that Valgavoth left large areas untouched and the people there would live fairly normally but we just wouldn't see that on cards. I don't know how convincing that explanation is, but it's what people said.

This is why definitions that keep closer to things that can be objective, such as the prevalence of the trope/genre before the age of cinema, and the number and extent of overt movie references, whether existing characters literally dress up like it's a Halloween party- are all better flags for what a hat set is

I don't think Duskmorne is an exception to what I've described, I'd fully call it a hat set in large part because there is nothing else other than "horror movie". As others have pointed out I think giving it an Eldraine treatment of "you and I both know this is a baseball bat, but it's actually a toy that doubles as weapon because in the murder plane you have to keep those on hand at all times" would have made the set feel more full and avoided the walkman issue.

I agree that things like the movie references and existing characters putting on the stupid fucking hats are stronger markers of a hat set, but I would say the aspects I highlighted are bits of flavour and worldbuilding that underlie what makes a hat set feel bad.

Theros and Amonkhet could easily be construed as "Magic but Greek/Egypt" but there is both the conflict of the story and the world that it takes place in and that latter half feels realized in a way that the hat sets fail to properly encapsulate
- We know what Ravnica is like, so where did all these fucking detectives come from?
-The frontier is an expansion from somewhere, where are these people coming from, are they ranchers or farmers, what is equipping them, what the fuck is this cactus going to steal or get paid with as a mercenary?

I think Duskmourne doesn't quite hit hat-set territory only on the grounds that it isn't a 'theme park' set. You had recurring characters go to duskmourne, but they weren't just there to 'ride the rides' and get stuff out of the gift shop. There was plausible reasons for them to go and the set was not just following them doing wacky themed stuff.

Whether the stuff in it was all thematically good is another question: Where duskmourne was at its best I think was starting from some vague psuedo-80s through the lens of what it would be like trying to survive haunted-house world over years and years following that. So the fashion being what it was, and tape-decks and baseball bats were all fine-- it just grated when card design forgot that degree of separation.

Really Acrobatic Cheerleader is the only card that was egregious enough to me to actually be an annoyance. Young woman doing a backflip away from monsters in a fucking modern cheerleader fit (not even period accurate) with flavortext hee-hee-hoo-hooing about how much harder gymnastics are than living in literal spooky-death-world.

Anyways, the point is that while hat sets tend to have poorly thought out set themes, misfiring set themes are not proof of being a hat set. New Capenna for example may or may not be a hat set, but that's separate from whether or not they blew the cops and robbers prohibition set by freaking the fuck out and erasing cops from existence.

morphling was the original and was super strong at the time.
I guess I grabbed the wrong art for torchling, it was from planar chaos, so it was a reference to morphling.
thornling was from conflux and probably was when they actually started making it a "cycle"
but then they made aetherling in maze's end and psyched everyone out. then brightling and endling came out fairly quickly.
"cycle" is usually within a single set, we only have fan names for this sort of thing. it's also not a true cycle, as thornling and brightling are mythics and they merged the flowstone-like abilities into one for the last two.

I actually love this card and the cactus guys in general. Had OTJ been an actual set we could have had the bad guys clear cutting and attempting to terraform the plane while the gay WotC approved politics crew tried to stop them while allying with the cactus people and other semi-intelligent creatures on the plane. There was so much potential in a frontier "everyone is here" set but they fucked it up by making it nothing but a hat set without teeth.
