Jews were expecting the messiah to be a virgin based on the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14.
>14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel

Which is also why no one questioned his lineage when he was alive. Elizabeth didn't question the virgin birth either in Luke 1:39-45. She was expecting the messiah to come from a Virgin.
The only explanation must be that the virgin comes from the Davidic line.
