I once upon a time read that Ubuntu once had a dedicated team working on proper font rendering. Which is great, because it means somebody is taking care over there. But, that was more than a decade ago by now, during upstart and unity days. No idea what happened and if Mr. Shuttleworth is still putting focus on it.
