Daisuke is on record saying that Baiken is a chick because he thought the main character from Rurouni Kenshin was a chick at first. Still, that's more inspired than most westoid designs pretty much ever outside of studios like Shiny Entertainment or classic ID and devs like Dave Perry, Adrian Carmack, John Carmack and John Romero.
People are going to get mad at me for saying this but DEI isn't the first wave of this shit. It's been happening since the middle of the 7th gen, when all the protagonists were generic white dudes withe the same build, look and similar voices along with a tragic past or a background in the military. It's just corporations doing a checklist of what appeals to their main audience so they can sell a product rather than make an artistic vision (that's also a good product but still has the creator's heart and soul in it).
It's just that the audience has changed to a non-existent one, the games went from mediocre but passable to just outright shit and the people at all levels of the company don't give a shit about video games rather than just the upper level management. Still, I'd rather have that than the absolute dogshit released as games nowadays.
