It's weird. I don't think you actually need to be intelligent to digest shows like this. You just need to be intuitive and try to actually understand the characters and feel it. I don't know how to explain it very well but I hated Greco when it aired and kept dropping tomino anime I watched like Dunbine and Lgaim and didn't really like Zeta or ZZ then suddenly out of fucking nowhere I decided to watch Brain Powered last month for no reason and I just got Tomino completely. Ironically that show is not about brains it's all intuitin and emotion. I got unfiltered finally. And it made me enjoy and get GQuuuuux too. (I know it's not Tomino but it is UC Gundam)

I hated FLCL so much on my first viewing then loved it a lot on my second too. The same thing for Evangelion 3.33.
