As someone who has kinda like an on/off relationship with splatoon from 1st to 3rd game, I've just recently returned as well to splatoon 3 after like 1 1/2 years an I can say that the people that still play are mostly well seasoned as casuals stopped playing by now
this in combination with being rusty and not used to new shit even makes turf war feel like a sweatfest sometimes
It might be discouraging, but keep on playing you might get the hang of it faster than you thought
