china had a written language before japan did but both spoke a different language at all points

also there is an ancient writing system that dates back to the 8th century
manyogana is the origin of the modern day katakana
i have read sources that this was the way the chinese recorded whatever the fuck the japs were talking about
the original characters pass tonal influence, not meaning
the nips took it home, it was preserved, but not officially used, for quite a while
how the characters were simplified over time is pretty cool
