Also what do you actually do within CCLeaner that creates a perceptible speed difference to you?
It's possible you have some programs that create a bunch of junk files but even that should really speed your PC up. I'd say placebo but you've probably considered that since you're asking here
>>105955409It wasnt placebo my pc was legit hanging up and freezing intermittently like it was running out of ram until I ran it. Night and day difference after the scan. I feel like windows just poops itself if you dont reinstall/fix it with external programs it just has too much bloat or is indexing too much garbage. I dont know what exactly it is though
>>105955433>legit hanging up and freezing intermittently like it was running out of ram until I ran itDid you reboot or anything as part of CCLeaner's clean up process? That's all it could be.
What specifically did you run in CCLeaner? The registry edits aren't generally assumed to be of much use, I don't know if they've added other things since
>>105955497Nope no reboot. Removed a lot of temp files
>>105955617Honestly if that's all it did then there's nothing there that suggests a source of improvement. Deleting files doesn't really speed up your PC unless they're running which those aren't,
The only slight thing could be thumbnail cache if Windows handles it in a dumb ass way but even that shouldn't really cause freezing.

Back before we even had USB people had to be quite a nerd to attempt such a thing. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but it was not normal. A far more common thing was people buying components to add to pre-built machines, like sound cards or anything else that went in the PCI slots.
The no name PCs didn't have to manufacture their own, there were OEMs and a lot of the "variance" in such markets is never true variance, but just differently molded plastic front panels onto the same chassis with 1:1 identical interiors and bay arrangements. A whoPC would just put in a custom order for a bunch of cases with their customized front panel and that was kind of it. Tear the plastic off, and you have the same cases across many builds.

i was thinking of buying some extra storage but before pulling the trigger on some big mechanical SSDs for data storage, i was wondering if theres any simple, intuitive way to set them up as NAS

>main desktop PC running debian
>2 linux laptops i barely ever use

my idea would be to have this centralized NAS or laptop running my "storage" at home and being on 24/7 or nearly 24/7, so i could access it from any device at home, does that make sense? have it be an easily browsable folder from my computer and laptops

must have programs for a new computer build? What's the new regseeker or ccleaner?
Ok, so:
I'm on EndeavourOS. I have Vivaldi installed (please don't go full Stack Overflow on me)
I have a hard disk with a separate (Windows) installation of Vivaldi I occasionally want to use when I plug it in.
I copy Vivaldi's default .desktop file on the hard disk. I add this argument:
'--user-data-dir=./Programs/Vivaldi/User Data'
I launch the .desktop file. It launches Vivaldi as if it was the first time it's ever been run. I have no idea where it stores this new profile, because the default folder of both my PC and the hard drive are intact.
I open bash from the hard disk and run
vivaldi --user-data-dir='./Programs/Vivaldi/User Data'
It correctly launches Vivaldi with the profile from the external drive.
I install dex and run
dex Vivaldi.desktop
This also launches Vivaldi with the desired profile.
Why the fuck won't the .desktop file work when I open it by double clicking?
Yes I know I can just create a .sh file with the command and I already have and it works, but I want to know why the .desktop file won't work.
Is there anything in tech where using the basic is superior?

>>105962872One complexity grows enough, it becomes near-impossible to maintain anything truly uncucked, for a simple reason: the barrier to entry becomes so incredibly high that only a very small number of entities are able to remain in the space and it's exceedingly difficult for any new players to enter; those entities inevitably must be quite large and bureaucratic and well-funded to be in a position to work with the complexity; and as a result the entities have extreme power over the market and a very high incentive to use that power for their own benefits and profits rather than caring for customers out of pure goodwill.
Simply put, there's no way for hobbyists or enthusiasts to make "their own open-source hardware stack", and there's almost no space in the market for a new commercial offering tailored to privacy/open-source/freedom enthusiasts.
It's just about possible on the very fringes of the market, as you can see from Talos, but those are exceedinly niche, very low volume, extremely overpriced and under-performant compared to normal systems. That's basically the best you can have, given the barrier to entry to design your own modern chips.
OSes are almost in the same position, they're just ever so slightly less complex. Even so, Linux is rather cucked too because it got too big to safely remain independent, and the various truly independent projects around have been pushed back into being so niche that most people don't consider them as viable alternatives.
>>105963399There's plenty of both type a to c and type c to c cables on the market. When you say "charger is usb c to c", what do you mean? Usually chargers are "wall plug to (some) USB". Are you saying your charger has a type c port and you only have type a to type c cable? Just buy some c-to-c cables for 10 bucks then, it's useful to have both kinds around right now.
They're pushing C as the only port type, partly for uniformity, partly because the host->slave distinction has become really muddied with the proliferation of usb otg. Hosts and slaves just work as necessary and distinguishing cable ends and ports is not that important.
>>105964751Mostly in cases where reliability or power consumption matter. Adding more stuff to something "basic" tends to make it more complex and therefore have a higher total risk of failure somewhere. Adding more stuff on the hardware level also tends to increase power requirements (and adding more stuff on the software level can increase load and therefore power consumption).
>>105965514The definition of the deep web is that you can't crawl it, at least normally. They're usually quite boring so I don't know if anyone maintains a curated list. If you wanted to crawl them you'd probably have to set something up individually for every site, usually involving creating an account and spending a ton of time working around anti-bot and anti-crawler measures they will have.
>any other tips or forumsSome deep web sites already have projects attempting to, if not index them, at least do something potentially similar, maybe you'd find it useful to check those projects. Xcancel for example tries to proxy twitter, which twitter normally tries pretty hard to block, so you can look at how they're handling it in order to build your scraper. I don't know if anything like that exists for discord, which is indeed probably the biggest unindexed deep web repository around.
>>105966344>1. Both are the same regarding the privacy?Yes.
>2. Assuming I'm browsing SSL website, and I'm not getting bad SSL, would anyone be able to see what am I browsing? No. Well, they'd be able to see the website name and that's it.
But if you're visiting a brand new website, make sure you're actually on https. Because one thing the internet owner can do is try to serve you the http website in cleartext. Browsers remember sites that you visited in https before and will flag an error if it suddenly stops working, but if it's a website you've never visited before the browser can't know whether someone is intentionally blocking the https version or whether the website just doesn't support it.
>3. Would using VPN solve this issue? or I'd be just giving my info to another agency? It would indeed give an extra layer of encapsulation - eliminating the downgrade attack from above and also hiding even the domain names. You would be giving your info to another agency, but you'd be hiding it from the first one; it's not worse, it's just a choice you have to make: do you trust the ISP provider in the appartment more, or do you trust the VPN provider more?
thinking about buying this for its gigabit QoS because im stupid and the modem my ISP provides is locked down more or less.
everyone says gigabit internet shouldnt need QoS but when im streaming a game on one PC and playing the game on the other PC I can feel it.
the streaming PC is only outputting maybe 50mb/s and the internet line is 3 gig.
technically 50mb/s is a drop in the bucket but I swear I still feel it, and if I can put my gaming PC on the "fast lane" so its packets always arrive first I think that would settle my autism.
>>105966989>2I understand that, I guess there's setting in browser to force HTTPS only.

>3Downgrade attack?
Like forcing website to use HTTP?
>do you trust the ISP provider in the appartment more, or do you trust the VPN provider more?I trust the ISP, since they can see me
I don't trust the host that own the router/network, since they can do what they want
>VPNNot really trust them, but if it's free and can use it to hide my traffic from network owner.
What about cloudflare warp?
Since they own the internet at this point.
>>105967054>And checking the connection and what company verified it to be safe, right?Yeah, if the url says https (and the browser didn't give any big warnings about the certificate being invalid) then it's safe
>>3>Downgrade attack?>Like forcing website to use HTTP?Yes, the one from point 2
>I trust the ISP, since they can see meI'm not sure what you mean by that. They can see you just as your host can see you and neither seems like a reason to "trust" them.
Not that trusting the ISP is wrong I just don't get this reason.
>I don't trust the host that own the router/network, since they can do what they wantAnd so can the ISP but you're right that the host might have more reason to be retarded. Then again I'm sure the ISP employs interns and niggers who might also decide to be retarded.
>Not really trust them, but if it's free and can use it to hide my traffic from network owner. You have to trust them more than the network owner. Like I said it's a choice: you hide your traffic from your local network owner and operator, and instead show it to the VPN owner and operator.
>cloudflare warpI have zero clue what it is or how it works, but the reasoning that they own half the internet anyway is sound, you probably won't be revealing much to them that they don't know.
Notable exceptions are big tech sites that don't use cloudflare, e.g. google, steam, etc. If you use those through a cloudflare thingy, you will in fact be giving cloudflare more info.

What's different about mkv and mp4 file format, if the video and audio codec is the same?
>>105967846not gonna lie i was searching for "BTFO youtube" for way too long.
>>105967885Well then the container is different
Codecs encode a stream of data (audio or video). Containers bundle together one or more streams, plus extra stuff like subtitle listings, metadata, images (e.g. for thumbnails) etc., into a predetermined structure. Some formats support only some specific codecs; for example, mp4 only supports VP8, VP9 or AV1 video, and Vorbis or Opus audio. Here are the stream types mp4 supports: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP4_file_format#Data_streams
MKV (full name Matroska) is intended as a very flexible container that can store a wide variety of streams with a wide variety of codecs and still be valid. (The webm format is apparently based on matroska, by the way.)
To be able to play a file, a media player needs to both support reading the container format (to read the metadata, and extract the streams) and the codecs of the streams themselves (to be able to actually decode and play them).

If they're hosted on the clearnet but in a third world jurisdiction, it's not that hard but you do need either the cooperation of the third world entity or sufficient surveillance to act on your own. If the owner still lives in your country but just hosts it overseas then it's usually still easy, but I imagine it can be annoying to prosecute pablo.gonzales.87 living in the peruvian jungle and hosting his baby monkey and baby spic equal opportunity torture site.
If it's hosted on the dark web, it's only as easy as the owner makes it easy. Nobody is perfect and, if the site is big enough for law enforcement to put resources into tracking and surveilling it, you only need one slip-up to deanonymise yourself, so it's usually only a matter of time. But if the owners are actually intelligent and good at opsec, it can be very difficult. Of course you can also target general users rather than just the owners, or if it's a marketplace you can target buyers and sellers, but that's a lot of smaller fish and takes a lot more effort than if you're able to cut off the entire site at its head. Point is, though, it takes time and money and resources, and law enforcement is not infinitely-funded - there's always triage going on when picking what to persecute.
Also, from knowing someone who tried to host a hobby filesharing site (i.e. a pomf/catbox clone), apparently what pedos who are too dumb or lazy to use tor do is they just upload their shit on normal filesharing websites and share links around. So you can prosecute them individually but like I mentioned that's a lot of small fish to prosecute one by one worldwide, it's expensive and takes time.

And if you do need (or want) to work in a cafe, like the other anon said, as long as you're actually working and not larping it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks. IMO it's kinda rude if the cafe is absolutely full and some people are just sitting there for hours doing work and not even eating, but that's a separate issue. In another 5-10 years you will probably be a different enough person that all the data Google and Meta have now will be completely useless.
Privacy is also not black and white. Don't jump into a hyper-schizo rabbit hole, realise it's too hard to be completely untraceable in every way, get discouraged and give up privacy entirely. Reducing your data footprint a little bit is still a little bit better than not reducing it at all; and if you refuse to use a service out of privacy concerns, or even annoy your friends into not using one, you will very very slightly influence the improvement of privacy in the world.

>>105979650A private network is basically anything that's not the internet. You have to think of the internet as a network of networks - so for example your laptop connects to your router over your local private network, and then your ISP router routes your packets into the public internet. To be pedantic, it routes them into your ISP's own private network, and then your ISP peers with other ISPs so your packets can move from network to network until they finally reach the destination server's ISP who routes them into the destination server. (Which itself might be behind its own local router, by the way.)
Normal networks are kept together by being connected physically. A virtual private network is a way to extend a single private network across a physical interconnect that crosses over into other networks. So effectively, it's a way to communicate with another computer that's physically connected to you over e.g. the internet (or any other intermediate networks), as if you were on a single LAN. Wikipedia actually defines it quite well:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network
Commercial VPNs do basically this, but they set up their servers to function as proxies, so you use the virtual private connection to the VPN server as effectively a proxy hop for web requests. Through the tunnel, the VPN server is on a "local" network to you despite being located somewhere on the internet, and then it just routes all your packets out to the rest of the internet.
A "proper" VPN is not that different from a commercial VPN except that it's one that you set up yourself and configure for your own purposes. E.g. that anon wants to set up a VPN tunnel to a machine on his local network, which would then be able to route his packets to other machines on his local network, which are normally behind his router's firewall.

Protonmail used to be good for this, but I've heard they've made it really annoying to sign up lately. cockli doesn't ask for a phone number but a lot of website block it, mostly exactly because of that (it's worse for spam protection and also you are a BAD goy if you don't give your phone number!!). I have a Dell 7400 laptop. I used to use it daily for 10 hours, mostly on battery. I would charge it throughout the day as needed, and would get around 3-4 hours out of it before it needed a charge.
then one day i noticed it started to drain the battery much faster. it was like this for a week, i had to throw it on a charger every 90 minutes.
we had some 7400 at work, so i yanked a battery out of a unit that had low SSD hours. it was a higher capacity battery. it did not make a difference, the battery still drains quite fast.
running windows 11, i never reinstalled the OS, maybe it was some os update fucking things up? its been over a year since this happened and this new battery still wont last long. i dont use this laptop much anymore. i dont think i grabbed a bad battery either, the ssd had 448 hours on it.

This is probably one of the few places that using an LLM would be justified. Though then again, there is SOME value in the exercise - you're still learning to get up to speed with an existing complex library, and yes, that in itself is a skill that will make you better at learning other frameworks etc. in the future.
It just really could've been practiced on a framework that would also be useful itself rather than an ancient piece of shit you'll never touch again.
Where would be a good place to buy a Debian GNU/Linux poster for one's room - or general GNU/Linux decorations.
What could have possibly gone wrong with my monitor?
The cable was a little mixed in with some other, so I took it out and re-arranged it. Now my monitor says "no signal" and doesn't register at all. I tried restarting, updating graphics drivers and a new cable, but nothing works. I will try with a different monitor soon when I get it here, but what the hell happened?

Has anyone other than the U.S. Military put small high density imaging sensors behind not phone lenses?
If I wanted to be a "reach" fag with a fancy 400mm full frame camera lens and 2x teleconverter (800mm) that's still not enough for things like basic moon photos. Crop cameras aren't any better, they're low res too and don't even crop enough.
If I had a smartphone sized sensor that would give me around a 5x crop factor giving me a good ~2000mm effective focal length or even ~4000mm with the teleconverter, letting me image the moon at 12MP with it taking up most of the frame or being zoomed in on craters 2x.
I know a massive telescope and a full frame sensor would be better, I just think it would be cool to stick a tiny (super dense) sensor behind a real lens and see how it performs.
Also with a 5x macro lens and this 5x crop factor, perhaps a system like that might finally let me see my own penis in high res. 61MP isn't enough. It's small.
>>105981793I just remembered and realized that's what the Nikon P900 / P1000 are but I wrote those off because they were JPEG only and no RAW, looks like P1100 supports RAW but I don't know whether the lens is very good or not.

>>105982591Remove the drive from the case then use separate USB adapters.
My external SSD and leftover spinners either don't get cased or get 3D printed enclosures with no electronics so I need not rely on enclosure PC boards.
>>105982892gl-inet is pretty cool. You have to deal with companies which curate their customers somehow. No mass market outfit will ever respect you because they wouldn't be in business if they did.
>>105982892None. Even the small two-guy enthusiast operation who started selling custom thingamajigs because they wanted one themselves, there was nothing on the market, and then they decided to make it available to others - even those will likely be quite happy to pocket some extra profit at your expense if they can get away with it. At least in most cases - it's not impossible but it's truly extremely rare to find someone in business who has real integrity.
As for actual corporate brands, at best you can hope that they use "caring about the customer" as a marketing tactic, but it's still nothing more than that. If they decide that they can make more profit by cutting a corner somewhere, e.g. because it won't hurt their image THAT much but will save a lot of costs, then they will all do it.
>>105983189>even those will likely be quite happy to pocket some extra profit at your expense if they can get away with itAs well they should. To do otherwise would be immoral. Accurate prices are the lifeblood of the economy. If they aren't balls deep in their customers' wallets, how are potential competitors supposed to read the market?
>>105983331I mean fair enough, but in return I have no reason to "respect" them. Business is business after all.

>>105987201>1 Watt of power being consumed for 1 hour is equal to 1 WhSure, the definition includes time, but the unit itself doesn't. 1 Wh is simply equal to 3600 J, no time mentioned in there, it's stupid
>>105987229The "unit" is literally two units multiplied together, one of which is time. Watts * hours. How the fuck does that "not include time"?
If you mean that it's stupid to use a compound unit rather than just joules, then yeah sure I agree, but you're phrasing it in the most ass-backwards way possible if that's actually what you meant. And the reason watt-hours is used is because uber-normies can see the power consumption of their devices (e.g. a 3000W kettle, a 10W lightbulb, etc.) and can see how long they're on for and so it makes it easy for them to calculate electricity usage. This is useful to maximise the amount of retards who can understand it, even high school dropouts can see "oh I have my light turned on for five hours a day, it uses 20W, so I'm using 100Wh, or 3000Wh per month. My electricity costs $0.1 per kilo-Wh so I'm paying $0.3 to run my lightbulb" whereas if you measured it in joules they'd go "hwaaa I'm not some kinda physician professor man that's too complicated man"
>>105980956>>105980999Joules is what makes more sense regarding physics calculations but watt*hours are more descriptive to human beings.
>>105979650VPN for most people means a setup where your VPN endpoint (the clearnet IP to your VPN service) is routed normally thru your home router and everything else is given the VPN's internal gateway as a route. That way your pirating and CP goes thru the VPN service.
But VPN generally doesn't always mean that, it could mean something like an intranet being routed over the internet within an encrypted tunnel. For example a way of accessing your workplace and their network drives or printers even.
Then there's even simpler point-to-point style, no networks involved: I use it for accessing a singular server so I won't have to secure all those services, all I see a "VPN adapter" that's "plugged into" my PC.
tl;dr a VPN is just a virtual network interface
>>105985848>...and the pin test is not a reliable indicator of a PSU working.Generally there is no reliable indicator whether a PSU is working unless it's some bespoke job you can't replace easily. For standard PC PSUs it's cheaper to buy a new unit than risk damaging a proper test apparatus with a dodgy one.
