The medic revives them and he's vanilla, and it's not just that kind of archtype: These enemy types in pic related are also more frequently used throughout the campaign than what Quake 1 does for its grunts and enforcers. The zombies kind of help make up for their absence but aren't too threatening.

I've seen opinions ranging from "not as good" to "way better" than the vanilla campaign. I'd say they're as good if not better.
They both also make an effort to improve some of the original enemy behavior. If for whatever reason you're in the mood to try it again, consider playing the original campaign levels through either the Reckoning or Ground Zero expansion. The Nightdive remaster is a mixed bag of changes imo but still fun.
