At the very least I'm not a complete beginner. I just fell for the "don't study kanji, just immerse and learn them from vocabulary" meme. I focused on grammar at the beginning and completed one of the core2k decks. After a couple of years of not studying I forgot most of the words so I'm starting again. I now found out that knowing the kanji beforehand helps me with learning new words
