If communism didn't work, the Cold War never would have happened. Over the course of just a few decades, communism transformed Russia from a backwards feudalist shithole with only a railway and few factories to it's name into a full blown industrial superpower. Despite all of this, the Western capitalist class did not take communism seriously enough at first.
It was only after World War 2 that the parasites truly began to quake in fear at the the great and terrible power of communism. WW2 was a war fought primarily in the European theatre, and the European theatre was itself fought primarily between Germans and Soviets. The Soviets were responsible for approx. 85% of the German scalps taken during the war. It's no surprise that the rest of the so-called "Allies" would see this and absolutely shit themselves. And it's certainly no surprise that they would pursue a Cold War against the USSR immediately following WW2 when the Soviets were at their weakest.
"Communism doesn't work", apprarently. In fact, it doesn't work so much that the Western imperialists spent ludicrous amounts of time, money, resources and effort trying to destroy it. Proxy wars were launched, rivers of blood were shed, propaganda was peddled and, most fatally of all, the USSR was subverted from within slowly but surely after the loss of Stalin, one of the greatest leaders to have ever lived. If it really didn't work, none of this would have been necessary. The imperialists could have sat by and watched the system crumble of it's own accord, much like the Chinese are doing now patiently wait for the degenerate capitalist system to finally fall apart.
