They were built in to the receiver forging of the M1917. In fact the reason the US did finally put a receiver sight on the ‘03A3 is because the ancient M1903 production tooling that Remington had inherited from Rock Island had finally worn out and new, more efficient machinery was being designed. So they thought why not also redesign the receiver forging the new machine will make so that it has a built-in base for a receiver sight.
