That didn't happen to these guys. Adrian Carmack did art for doom and his art was extremely iconic and he did great job at it, but the ones that got the brand recognition for Doom was John Romero and John Carmack.
Having to deal with assholes isn't "the evil artist" issues, it's relationship issues and it's something you have to work on it as long as you're working with someone else.
People learn to avoid assholes, or try to avoid seeing each other as assholes through experiences, avoiding human connection like a troglodyte living in a cave isn't the answer to this problem.
