Because they were genuinely more serious characters overall, and just plain talked less. There is this pervasive notion that every character, no matter how insignificant - from every hick conscript to every stoic knight to every deposed lordling - needs to be "fleshed out" (i.e. talk a lot about their past), but how much of that absolute blather is even interesting?
I don't need Harlotte to talk about her tragic poorfag slut life 10 times in a row. I get it after the first one. Shit is just annoying but you can't convince the modern fan that there's a better way than this. They're too attached.
