Character designs are good, and the core gameplay is great, but it has a lot of issues that drag it down. still really liked it, was cool to see an improved version of the ogre battle gameplay system.

UO at least knows how to set a fucking scene - what direction is. The ending with your waifu against the Great Evil is hype as hell. FE cutscenes have been aesthetically bankrupt for decades now, post-Jugdral. It's reached an all time incompetent low in the 3DS/Switch games, where characters stand around robotically and talk while someone is imminently about to self immolate or commit regicide. I don't know, I think Louis's quote on "memorable moments" has some real merit.
Gameplay is overhated too. It's on the easy side but at minimum it isn't a trivial, fundamentally broken trash fire like Gaiden, Awakening, and 3H.

The only problem I have with 3H's traumadumping characters is that it applies to almost all of them. There needs to be more variety. Both 3H and Engage have this problem with variety. 3H has too many traumadump characters and Engage has too many gimmicky no depth characters. Older FEs had a better balance of the too. One thing you can't say about Kaga, he doesn't waste time making characters talk about dick, like you see in 3H. Character is revealed through character moments. There's a gorillion secret events, special talks, hidden connections that you have to tease out to learn about the characters. Things happen more organically, often with a gameplay reward attached, rather than in the "support conversation zone."
