Duh, the problem with this shit is that it draw upon the very definition of Free-will & Sapience and Meaning of existence.
If "sapient" creatures are merely the NPC of a game played by actual persons, logic dictate they don't have any responsibility or free-will, the rules are knows and outcome of the game is expected.
The characters is 100% bound by the whims of the gods for those being the very reasons he both exist and is able to "refuse" praying for them he's just a variable of procedurally generated NPC you can't control directly.
OOTS has its flaws but at least the gods are trying to sustain themselves and don't have any better mean than farming soul food.
