They weren't rating the population as a whole, just the people on OK cupid. The only people who resort to online dating are the bottom 5% of women and bottom 15% of men, so obviously most of them are going to be below average attractiveness.
The women's ratings for men on OK cupid are more realistic than the men's ratings of women. The men were over-rating women out of thirst.
The reason there is a correlation between looks and personality is because better looking people objectively tend to have better personalities than uglier ones.
You just want there to be some kind of teen movie just world thing where all of the hot Chads and Stacys are assholes and bitches, while the ugly people have a heart of gold, but the real world is pretty much the exact opposite of that.
Less attractive people tend to have shitty personalities because they are insecure about their looks and are bitter and bitchy as a result.
More attractive people are living life on easy mode and are more likely to get better treatment because of their looks, so they are more likely to be optimistic and friendly and pleasant to be around.
