For me it was because my family were dirt broke so we just hoarded demos. That's how I experienced a bunch of old PS1 games that still sit in my head rent-free.
Some I just have images in my head and I have NO idea what game they're from or even if they're just hallucinations.
Shit like this game Overboard I only ever played the demo of but sits in my mind all the time.
