>SHTF scenario and your house is within throwing distance of a tarmac road then you're already fucked and no amount defensive landscaping will save you
In a SHTF scenario, you really need to know your neighbors, have some kind of communications, good marksmanship, and ability to block roads. If everyone, or just about everyone is forted up, the alarm gets raised, then any attacker starts getting fire from every point of the compass. In such a world, the defensive landscaping keeps the attackers from being able to rush you, sneak up on you, or recon your position easily. The Rhodesian farmers would be the example. Pic related is from some version of FM 90-10. Instead of apartment blocks, picture houses in a suburb or farms. Mutually supported strongpoints covered by interlocking fields of fire. There's more to it than that but TL;DR is a thing.
