Kamek is in Mario Galaxy going by official card descriptions and literally becomes a Mario Party host recently. As you mentioned he got movie status. And in Mario Kart World there's a Yoshi island reference in the ending cutscene, confirming the item magikoopa is Kamek. He's getting more important/established. He just needs a entire mainline mario cutscene dedicated to being Bowser's righthand man akin to the loads he has in Yoshi Island games and Mario RPGs.
