I did it on a couple of Zotac 3090s a while ago. The thermal paste on the die itself wasn't the problem but the stock thermal pads that are supposed to keep the VRAM cool were fucking horrible. For some reason the stock ones were those thick oily pieces of shit that resembled sticky rubber feet more than something that's supposed to conduct heat.
Swapping them out helped temps a lot and the card never goes over 70C now even if you push it to the limit. The cards now stay quiet instead of hitting 85C over modest usage and having the triple fans go off like a fucking helicopter.
