I believe that Age of Dark is an analogue for actual dark ages. After a civilization crumbles, men regress into their previous, lesser state (hollows). Then it's a wait until some grand individual discovers a new Flame to guide them.
Think fall of Rome -> Dark Ages -> Renaissance and Modernity. But now that dies too...
