I'll be honest, I never actually expected you to show up in the actual thread. This works out though because it means you already got to see my review.
I'll admit, I probably was being really hard on Ash due to him walking into Paul's main way of dealing with Pikachu. I still don't think he's at the level he was in Sinnoh, but you're definitely correct that he did play the battle better in every other aspect due to what you mentioned. Recognizing that he needed to remove Paul's spikes is actually one of my favorite parts of that battle so I really should have at least brought it up during my review.

Being realistic, overcoming Alain should be more of a challenge than most, if not all, of the league. His Mega Charizard is actually insane in terms of feats when you really look at it and the anime does a really bad job of hyping up Diantha at every turn. You are right about Serena being an important element to take into account, so I do give you this as well.
Overall, I wasn't intending to sound negative in my review, I do think you've done a really good job writing this series so far and I look forward to seeing what else you have in store with it. It does surprise me that it wasn't intended to be an altoshipping story though.
