Again, MK3 disappointed a lot of people initially because they didn't have the fan favorite characters in it. It can't be understated how much the MK ninjas were/are beloved by a huge chunk of the fandom.
I'll even go this far, and say theoretically, if SF had more actually cool shotoclones, they'd have the same phenomenon. Everyone already loves Ryu/Ken/Akuma.....people didn't care for Sean cause well he's not cool and SFIII had the "no familiar characters" problem itself, plus coming out late in the genres tooth. But I guarantee if they had like two or three more shotos who had their own cool factor, they'd also be fan favorites. People love that "same template different flavor" shit, it's why Sonic is so popular among other things like Mega Man, colorful donkeys, etc.
