I will say that it's not often on display as much in anime/manga or light novels, especially in the easier stuff, but it's hilariously bad especially when you start reading Visual Novels and the text starts getting higher quality/more difficult, but it's not exclusive to just visual novels

Back when i hadn't been learning for too long and still had english subtitles on for some currently airing shows that had no japanese subtitles available and featured some harder vocab, i would constantly see lines that were completely off in tone/nuance, were just blatantly wrong or had the usual localization spin to it to the point that it really dawned on me how beyond terrible translations are. Japanese media fully in japanese vs japanese media with english translation are two extremely different worlds
