Well, basically, the northeast of Brazil is a giant arid shithole. Back during that time, the whole day area was pretty much ruled by "Coronels", who were basically Manorial Oligarchs who ran the country like slavedrivers. Voting was public, so they could literally kill you for voting for the wrong person.
Anyway, it was poor as shit and generally horrible, so obviously you ended up having bandits who went around making things even worse. They were known as "Cangaçeiros" and they were some wacky ass clothing
The most famous of them was 'Lampião' or "Lamplight" (I believe this is because he was said to shoot so fast his gun looked like a lamp) who had a big gang that went around butchering and robbing people for a long time until the government had to send in the army to take them out with machine guns, armored cars and all sorts of stuff.
