Well damn, the drill thing worked. I used a piece of painter's tape on the chuck to provide some traction and basically just rested the mouse on top of the drill while it spun the ball for a few minutes, and it's a marked improvement.
Still not sure if it's a net improvement/the bearing replacement was a benefit overall, but at least the new ones don't feel gritty anymore.
