any other vocals just wouldn't work for the subject matter. It's music designed to be like a horror movie but as music, trying to sound like a monster just fits it.

and that's part of your problem. Most death metal bands don't take themselves that seriously, it's all just fun and a lot of it is tongue in cheek, and a lot of it s just literally inspired by horror movies that the songwriters liked. The first Death Metal album was inspired by City of the Living Dead, Evil Dead, Reanimator, Cannibal Ferox, and Zombie.
Don't take it seriously just have fun with it the same way you watch a zombie movie or friday the 13th movie.
