I feel like the people who came up with that theory don't quite get that you don't have to explicitly identify as nationalist to do what literally everyone does and imbibe the normative values of your particular society, and nationalism is a big presence in modern Japan. Like, regardless of whether or not Himaruya is a nationalist, he definitely took on sentiments common in Japan, like the anti-Korean narrative and (honestly kinda accurate) assumption that everyone either loves or admires Japan

I mean, nationalism is a specific thing with a certain history and is really not the same thing as the more general patriotism.
Nationalism is a specific ideology born around the 18th and 19th centuries that centers the society around a particular conception of the nation as a culturally distinct community, unified by a shared history and destiny.
Thing is, that "shared history" tends to be conceived along the lines of language and ethnicity to the exclusion of others, so you should be able to easily see where that starts to get dicey for a lot of people. If you want some illustrations, think back to your school lessons about the history and ideology surrounding the mass deportations conducted during the break-up of the Ottoman Empire, or the expulsion of Indians from Uganda.
Or that obscure historical period when the modern Japanese state went under a different flag
