I really hate Nintendo's way of "balancing" multiplayer games. They remove any mechanic or tactic that allows you to outplay others by playing the game normally, but then they do literally nothing about the degenerate strategies that arise out of that decision. Smash Bros. and Mario Kart are the worst examples.
>the most important advanced technique in Melee is L-canceling, not wavedashing / wavelanding, because it makes moves safe-on-shield and lets you start and extend combos
>L-canceling was an entirely intentional technique in both 64 and Melee (source: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/n01/n64/software/nus_p_nalj/smash/Control.html#空中攻撃着地)
>Nintendo gets butthurt
>remove L-canceling
>decrease hit stun
>now fewer attacks are safe-on-shield and grounded attacks can't extend combos consistently because you can't L-cancel into them
The end result is Ultimate: a game where the top tiers are all zoners and DLC characters with gimmicks spamming projectiles and safe aerials at each other. There's one top tier rushdown character who isn't a zoner or gimmick character in disguise: Fox. People who play it competitively are fucking miserable.
It's the same shit with Mario Kart: remove mechanics, limit the effectiveness of new mechanics, obfuscate character and kart statistics (which does nothing to prevent people from sweating), punish people for trying to win, and then do fucking nothing about "bagging" and every single person playing as a baby in the blooper kart, which is a hundred times more degenerate.
The "not my problem" design philosophy.
