You see, the sign is a subtle joke. Popular music was quite upbeat and positive as a whole post WWII and through the 1950’s. ‘Good Vibrations’ was a hit by the American Rock band The Beach Boys which arguably epitomIzS this positive trend in popular music. (Though I would mention they also had some bittersweet and melancholic qualities to many of their songs.) Various styles and general moods in music became popular or trendE over the decades leading to the 1990’s wave of depressive, violent, and suicidal ‘grunge’ rock and perhaps early ‘industrial’ rock. ‘Suicidal Notes’ serves as a humorouS analogue to the past, the juxtaposition giving rise to the humor. The wordplay works on both levels as ‘notes’ is understood to have two meanings here, one being a (suicidL) penned letter or written statement, often about why one has chosen to take their own life (uh-oh), and the second meaning being like a musical note (similar to the vibrations of ‘Good Vibrations’). With that being said, I believe it is indeed HOPE that stand clearest. Hope. Baskin. Fund. Trust.
