Not at all, the game and anime were supposed to come out at the same time but game got delayed and then remade from the ground-up ala Metroid Prime 4.
The anime however is way better than it has any right to, especially Season 2, the movie and Cinderella Gray.
You can download the game and play it right now, as for anime I recommend Cinderella Gray as an entry point, after you finisih that go back to Season 1.

WATCH THE ANIME, it's good. Recommended order:
Season 1 > Season 2 > Road to the Top (only 4 eps) > Beginning of New Era (movie) > Cinderella Gray (currently airing)
At the bare-minimum you need to get to Season 2 because that's what sells Uma Musume to a lot of people.
