I disagree. Larian has created cult game after cult game, and they've never compromised their vision.
Only with BG3, the nature of the game's development and the fact that they were working on an IP that wasn't theirs made them more cautious in asking how to approach certain things.
Which I don't appreciate: character writing shouldn't be something collective, or on demand. Themes in a general sense of the game? Maybe, but the whole Halsin-gate "companion on request" will always remain strange to me.
