>the minority groups in Spain like the Basque and Catalans are trying to "punch up" at the central Spanish government
Holy shit this is so laughably wrong on so many levels, Catalans and Valencians and Basques are nothing like American blacks. Again you're letting some preconceptions and half truths lead you to some wrong answers. What a hot topic political cocktail. Since you mentioned Irish and Scottish before, please, listen to me when I say: you can drop a hillbilly from the deepest American south in Scotland, and he might gave trouble understanding at first but give him a couple years and not only will he grow accustomed to it, he might even pick up all sorts of quirks from the accent of HIS OWN LANGUAGE. But pick a rustic Andalusian, or a posh Madrid shithead, drop him in the average Catalonian town... That guy will never, ever, learn Catalan. I mean, if he's interested on it and learn it, or if he's dropped in a truly rural area where no one speaks Spanish then he truly will have to learn it... from scratch. Because unlike with Scottish, his Spanish knowledge will not be of sny use to him. But 9 out of 10 times instead, what he'll do, is... mingle with the local spanish speaking population. Because guess what... every Spanish region also has its own Spanish accents with their own quirks!! Spanish Valencian accent is a posh, "neutral" version of Spanish, just like Andalusian Spanish is a "crude" version of it with lots of "th" sounds (and actually, it's what most South Americans think of when they think of "Castilian"). But Valencian itself is an offshoot of Catalan with wildly different rules and even its own literary tradition. Fucking trust me. It's a very different situation than what most accents amount to.
