i honestly couldn't tell what kind of coming-of-age story it is.
it's more like the road, where the moral is "life sucks in this world".
movie was fuck weird. plenty of setup with no payoff.

also there were other annoying bits, like why the islanders fuck off the doctor after they saw him burning bodies
or why the doctor didn't just kill the alpha.
