Absolutely spot on. Heck every infected encounter felt like a struggle between life and death because of how fast and unrestrained the infected were. Unless survivors were carrying some heavy firearms, a fight against 2 or 3 of them was begging to lose valuable human resources since battles could happen when survivors were exhausted and in places they lacked a defensive stronghold. Mailer and the other soldier tore throught the mansion like it was nothing when nobody but Jim was prepared for it which attests to how fucking unpredictable and dangerous they were.

Funny because 28 days had real character development and stellar writing while being able to create the perfect horror atmosphere without having to sacrifice its narrative cohesion to preach some gibberish, contrived and out of place message to the audience. It's one of the few horror zombie movies that does not feel like it like it falls to the usual troopes to the genre. You could argue the final confrontation with the soldiers is the cliche human vs human climax but I felt that, most importantly, it signifies the coming of age call for Jim's character to become a hardened man who is capable of doing whatever it takes to survive and protected others he loves in this brutal setting - hence why the original ending was originally written as Jim giving his life away to save Frank's.

Don't overthink it. Doyle and Garland are hacks who can't write anything with actual substance. Yes, back in 2002 that distinction mattered because all we had back then was Romero/RE zombies(which were the inspiration for Days, so it was always more of a nitpicky intellectually masturbatory distinction anyways), but now it doesn't. We've had decades of zombie media influenced by Days. Days changed the landscape of what is expected of zombies(yes, they're zombies), but at the end of the day its influence has been fully integrated into the culture and what wasn't generic back then is now generic. You can't expect a Day sequel now to hang on to its purist splitter tropes, that would be even more generic at this point. What Years does with its "infecteds" might not be as groundbreaking as Days, but it tries to innovate within its own universe.
