Yeah the problem with the ending is that the devs are trying to have their cake and eat it too, "moving on from grief" usually doesn't include sacrificing an entire society of thinking beings, your friends and community you literally lived among for 16 years, the game really stretches the message it tries to say here, and I still think Maelle should be the only ending (it's just better and more messed up in all the good ways) but hey we wouldn't have the debates over who is right otherwise, so it was a smart move
