I think it could have been about half that and about half the gems paying Steven back by helping him with his own issues. I don't so much have a problem with Steven having emotional problems and the dynamic switching from him saving the gems to the gems saving him but the execution was so godawful and edgy. That stuff where he murdered Jasper, hurt Greg and tried murdering White felt completely out of character and the bit where he turned into a goddamned dinosaur was a special kind of stupid.

Exactly. The episodes with his gem family felt hollow and the episodes with the other gems sort of got away from the main plot of Future while the human episodes felt like they were just there to further Steven's angst. The Peridot episode felt genuine in a way the others didn't.
It is fucking criminal that we didn't have a Pearl, Garnet or Amethyst episode on that level.
