I really like it when the villain 'wins' at the end and levels up, then the hero is well and truly super-fucked and taking them down seems suddenly impossible. It was an innovation in the hero story that was one step up from the hero merely getting some kind of second wind or making some desperation move and stopping the ticking clock right before the bad guy blows up the world or whatever.
That way you get to at least see what shit looks like when the villains plan plays out, which is cool if even for a hot minute.
Has the best of both worlds when you compare it to the old myths like Hercules having to do something that seems literally impossible from the start, like killing the hydra, with the gods themselves throwing shit at your mere mortal arse? Even slaying a fire breathing dragon is starting off with get-fucked-impossible task and finding a way. But not the same if the hero has too much time to think about it.
Since they've been doing stories where the villain suddenly wins, and you get to see them happy, enjoying their victory, and at full power, not getting that almost seems like a gyp.
