quantum theory is working on this one actually. j. richard gott released a diagram of a theoretical rival to the big bang theory. instead of a single explosion, it takes on a trumpet form which would allow the energy to perpetuate itself indefinitely. it's pretty good actually, the book is called "time travel in einsteins universe".
