I feel bad for people with autism needing a concrete answer to everything.
They brought Pauline in because calling back on the past game generates more interest than relying on the usual side-kick, they turned her into a child because old Pauline looks too much like a bimbo to be a side protagonist.
Timeline and relationship doesn't exist because the game is all about bing bing wahoo, references to past games may exist but it's nothing more than that.
