In the past, fighting in a war was seen as having a sense of duty and honor while also being courageous. After Korea, veterans didn't really get the same reverence. No one really cares about Vietnam, Gulf War, or Iraq War veterans, and none have been elected to the presidency.

Also, presidents typically aren't the most well equipped to lead the military personally. You wouldn't want Trump on the ground dictating troop positioning. Neither would you want Biden, Obama, Bush Jr, or Clinton doing so. There's like a half dozen presidents, out of 45, that I would be comfortable with leading troops directly. Those being Washington, Jackson, Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, and Eisenhorer.
