Yeah it's fucked up. AI is gonna replace all work using technology like Nanite. The most secured line of work you can get for VFX related stuff is probably writing custom code for Houdini and Houdini itself. Unfortunately I was born with sub 100iq so my only choice is to ignore that magical program and stick my nose back into zbrush/blender/modo.
Don't feel bad about not learning anything related to 3D, the technology and workflows involved are as you said rapidly changing at a scary level. I can barely keep up with the substance suite shit and my apps are already 3-4 years out of date aside from blender.
My plan is to probably divert from environment work and world design into making anime rigs and high quality monster/demon sculpts. Pictured is a new prototype of a Zbrush+Blender bridged rig that allows me to pose and sculpt as I go in zbrush.
