Found your issue. Of course it's going to feel like shit if you stick with the slowest ship.
Both Leinyan and Exy give you much better control, the former comes with enough bombs to last for the entire game, but recovery will be tough. Exy has no real flaws, you don't need as many bombs if your ship is actually good and you don't even need to think about recovery.

Still, if you are playing Shotia and got to the last stage, might as well do what she does best.
