Patents used to be for actual devices. "Here I devised a method to cut gears with more precision than any other machine in existence", "here I built a mechanism that uses steam power to weave textile completely autonomously". Then you'd put it into practice and both advance industry while reaping your reward, and after a short period of time, others would then be able to make use of the idea (if nobody else came up with their own way to do it in the meantime, or even a better way).

Now it's all "hmm what if you make a game... or story or scenario... where someone says peepeepoopoo, in some context or something... yeah then that'll be our idea", with zero actual intellectual value behind it, zero invention or innovation. Patents used to be about "inventions" someone painstakingly worked on and wishes to monetize without being undercut, now it's just random ideas that some idea guy is paid to shit out 200 per day and filed just in case someone else shits out the same idea and you want to fuck over their business.
