Considering Archer's just Shirou with even more bluffing and trauma, I don't think it was that severe. FHA makes him out to be an anti-hero loner anyway, especially with how he treats Shirou and disregards Rin as his Master.
Besides, I find the pairing strange. If Rin knows Shirou will grow an extra 20cm and lose his suicidal tendencies anyway, why go for his disheveled self?
